Events

As Gothenburg ended its era as a town known for its shipyard, it entered a new era as a town for events and education. Today it has many events within different areas as sport, culture and festivals returning more or less yearly.

Literature

One of the biggest returning events each year is the “Book and library fair” which is the biggest fair in the Nordic region for publishers and libraries. Started in 1985 and is growing each year. In 2003 almost 110.000 visitors attended under the 4 days.

Theater and Dance

Gothenburg’s “Dance and Theater festival” is another big event which is set up every two year in the end of August. Started in 1994, the event contains many seminars and lectures as well as plays and performances set up on many stages around the town.

Musical Experience

The Jazz festival in Gothenburg started in 1988 and is returning each year with traditional jazz as its main attraction. It is mainly held during the month of August and around 25 different jazz bands plays during the festivals three days on different stages.

Ball kicking

The world’s largest football cup for youths aged 11 to 19 is called Gothia Cup and is taking place each year in July. It started in 1975 and has today grown to a big festivity with 1585 participating teams from 66 different nations in 2007.

Horses

In 1977 the Gothenburg Horse Show started and is a 4 day event held in the Scandinavium arena each spring. An international show and competition in horse jumping. In 2006 a new visitor record was noted with 82.500 visitors.

Mind challenging

The International Science Festival is an annual science fair held in May each year with the participation of both the Gothenburg University and Chalmers Technological High school which provides the scientific activities.

Cultural Boom

Culture Party is annual fair and street party which in 2007 replaced the old Gothenburg Party that had been arranged since 1992. During a couple of days in August, a big part of Gothenburg transforms into one giant street party with restaurants, beer tents, activities and of course different forms of culture and concerts on different stages.
