When it comes to culture, Gothenburg is a big melting pot blending all flavors and styles within culture.

Art

The art museum of Gothenburg is one of the most visited ones in Sweden due to the fact that they have the best collection when it comes to Nordic art from the later part of the 19th century but also one Picasso and a Rembrandt.

The Art school “Valand” was founded in 1865 and is educating young artists and is since 1977 a part of the university.

Performance Stages

The first official theater was built in 1779, but theater had been performed by various groups since the end of the 17th century in different barns and storehouses.

In 1865 the new theater, Storan, was built and is serving as a concert and conference hall today since the Opera house took over most of the musical productions in 1994.

The City Theatre which was inaugurated in 1934, is the oldest City Theater in Sweden.

The theater is renowned for its remarkable 1930´s architecture in the audience hall and of its huge rotational stage which is 18 meters in diameter and four floors deep.

The Gothenburg Opera

When the Opera house was completed in 1994 most of the productions from Storan, was moved here. Its huge stage which covers 500 square meters serves as a stage for ballet, musicals, opera and also for concerts of different types.

Between it’s premiere in 1994 and 2006 a total of 270 different performances have been performed including Cats, West Side Story, Madame Butterfly and Romeo And Juliet to name a few.

Moving Image

Gothenburg is home to the biggest film festival within the Nordic countries. Started in 1979 and by superstition in 1992, the creators named it the 14th festival instead of the 13th as it should have been keeping the right counting. It kicks off in the last week of January every year and continues for 10 days, screening films from all over the world on different locations all over the city and almost 24 hours a day.

Musical Experiences

Nefertiti is a jazz club that started in 1978 in Gothenburg and is home to more then 200 concerts a year. It is seen as the leading scene within the Nordic countries and have a international reputation as well. Except jazz they organize concerts with Blues, World Music, Tango and other styles.
